Being a kid from the 'burbs, my 1st exposure to hip-hop was one of the original hip-hop crews (they used to work in crews) called the Beastie Boys. They started with a party-boy reputation, but matured as they got older. Their third album (and my favorite of theirs) is called Check Your Head. I loved it because not only was it rap (and my parents hated rap) but it also had a rock edge to it (they do play their own instruments by the way). The cool kids will tell you that Ill Communication is their best album; the hipster-types will tell you Paul's Boutique; the Purists will tell you License to Ill. I say it's Check Your Head.
Sadly, Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch died in 2012 of cancer, and they were still creating good music at the time.
"The 1st song on" their 3rd album, and my song of the week, is Jimmy James.
