My song of the week is the same song by two different artists. The song is In Bloom originally by Nirvana, but covered by alt country artist Sturgill Simpson.
Nirvana is hands down one of the most influential bands of all time. They literally changed the face of music. It's one of those things where you might not appreciate it unless you were "there", but overnight music changed when they released Smells Like Teen Spirit. In Bloom is the second song on their album Nevermind, sandwiched between SLTS and their second hit, Come As You Are. Even between two legendary songs, it resonates. | I have admitted several times before that I am not a big country fan, but I found Sturgill Simpson's cover of In Bloom whilst casually scrolling through iTunes. I recognized the title but expected some garbage cover. I was pleasantly proved wrong when I heard a version that is all his own while still honoring the original artists. Apparently it is a kind of lullaby version dedicated to his newborn son. If all country sounded like this, I wouldn't knock it at all. |
