Advice from My Bio Students 2 Years Ago

6/7/2018

With their first year of high school almost completed, I asked my students last year to leave advice for you, my students this year. When providing advice, I asked them to  consider both their successes as well as their struggles.

They were asked to provide advice regarding any the following:
  • Study habits
  • Maturity
  • Responsibility
  • Organization
  • Time management
  • Participation
  • Reactions to setbacks
  • Anything else they felt was relevant

Focusing mostly on their experience in my Biology class, they were asked to give their advice regarding my quizzes/quizlets, homework, class participation, MCAS prep, or anything else that they felt is important and relevant, again, for my class in particular.

Schools is not all about academics. They were also asked to provide advice regarding participation in the school's community outside the academic realm (i.e. extracurriculars, clubs, athletics, etc.)

Since maintaining a healthy social life is also a part of a high school student's experience, my students were also asked to provide appropriate advice regarding such. As well,  they may have left advice regarding the high school experience as a whole, even the experience outside of school itself. It is a confusing time for most kids and can be an overwhelming transition from junior high. Please consider the value of their advice.

Many of them put a lot of thought and effort into this. Their advice can be very powerful and should be very much appreciated... I know it is from me.

Well, you guys lucked out. You got the goat, Mr. Dubuque. Your year of freshman biology is definitely going to be a great year.
Over the course of the year, you will find that if you pay attention in class and do your homework, it is pretty hard to fail bio. Mr. Dubuque will do all that he can to help you succeed- it is up to you to do your part.
One thing that is great about Mr. Dubuque’s class is that he rarely gives homework. The purpose of homework in his class is to help you on quizzes and quizlets, and of course, the MCAS. Don’t stress about MCAS, Mr. Dubuque will have you fully prepared, if you do the little things like participate in class and focus during his notes.
All that most teachers, especially Mr. Dubuque, ask at FHS is that you try your best. This doesn’t just go for studying and doing classwork. Being a freshman in high school calls you to try your best to be as mature, responsible, and friendly as possible. Three other classes of older kids will be watching you, along with all of the teachers at Falmouth High. The expectation is that you will represent FHS in the best way possible.
Another important part in your first year of high school is to learn how to be your own person. Part of being mature is learning how to not care about what others think of you. You are your own person, and during high school you will have to make decisions that will help you succeed in life. Sometimes you will have to make tough decisions that may seem unpopular or uncool at the time, but in the end, not going to that party or not having a drink can keep you on a sports team or club, and most importantly, keep you on the right path to achieve your goals in life.
Speaking of sports teams and clubs, it is definitely benefitting to play sports and join clubs at the high school. Falmouth High School offers so many different extracurricular activities. Investing your time in these things will not only look good on your resume, but they will help you be a well rounded person. If you don’t play any sports, there are so many different ones to try that you could be a three sport athlete in your freshman year. The same thing goes for clubs. If you are interested in joining one, but are afraid of whether or not you want to be in it, all FHS clubs welcome anyone, and if you don’t like it after your first meeting, you don’t have to commit to joining.
Lastly, the high school can be a hard transition from junior high. It is so important that you work hard to manage your time. Those who don’t do their homework and slack off during class will have a very difficult freshman year. Don’t be like those people. If you do your homework consistently and find time to study, you will have a great year, and be setup on the right path to do your best at FHS.

My recommendation is to STUDY when he assigns something and then you don't have to worry about it the day before. Don't pull any 8th grade stuff no one likes it and no one is going to deal with it everyone already thinks freshman are annoying we are just going to think your even more annoying. BE RESPONSIBLE in class you wont graduate if you don't pass bio and you might think you look cool to fool around but then you will just be with your seventh graders repeating bio and no one will think you look cool then, BE ORGANIZED and come to school you might be tired and not want to but you miss one, you miss a whole lesson. In mr dubs class we take quizzes as tests and quizlets at quizzes. when he's absent we watch life movies narrated by oprah.

In order to succeed in your freshman bio class you should always do your homework and do it on time, this will help your grade a lot. This class is not very hard. If you want to excel in this class, you should always pay attention and study before quizlets and quizzes even if it is just for 5 minutes. Mr. Dubuque is a very fair teacher and is very helpful. If you ever miss school or lost a paper he has many different links to those things you need. In this class notes are very important so make sure you copy everything down and keep them organized. Overall the year is a lot of fun so be respectful and Mr. Dubuque will make it a lot of fun. Also being involved in sports allows you to become close with upper class men witch is always good.

Welcome Freshman!! Omg High School!!! So Big! Yeah its really not it gets really small really fast. But now your here in 4 ripe years you will going on your journey of life, if that is college, or military, or staying home!! I know everyone of these things you read will say to study, but like actually study for the quizzes, science last year is nothing like science this year, its much harder than last year, I thought I could just ace the quiz and I got a whooping 54%!! So you actually need to study and take science seriously this year!! And do the home works, they aren't hard and they help a lot with balancing out those test grades!! I also suggest getting a folder for this class and no notebook is really needed, we never take notes we just do fill in notes that help a lot. You don't want to lose all of those notes because they are the key to doing well on his tests. Also participation is a really good way to up your grade in this class just add in things you already knew and it helps a lot with your grade. As much fun you will have in this class you have to be mature also though, we joke around a lot but there is a difference between laughing at a joke and crossing the line, but lastly of course, have fun!! Mr Dubs is my favorite teacher and literally makes bio class so much fun I can't even explain it, you will have the best time in his class!!

Welcome to Falmouth high school! First off,It really inst that much different than Lawrence. Its a little bigger, there is more people but the only major difference is clipper time. Clipper time is a 45 minute period in which you can meet with a teacher or just do homework. I highly suggest utilizing clipper time as it as lead to me having more time to do activities outside of school because I always have my homework done in school. Other than that the high school is just a larger, more free Lawrence. But don't take that for granted. You must maintain a level of integrity, respect and maturity. You wont have someone holding your hand 24/7, its time to keep yourself organized and make sure you try your hardest in your academic career. There are two things ilI regret from Freshman year 1. Not study enough. Mr. Debuque's quiz are essentially the study guide but worded differently. Make the most of this by studying and doing your homework. And 2 I didn't participate enough. I barely made honor and the reason was I didn't participate enough, pay attention and cooperate and you'll be all set. If you bomb a quiz don't worry, just do better on the next one. Maybe you need to prepare better or pay attention in class more. Just change up what you did to prepare last time. Most importantly, enjoy yourself, join a school sport or a club. You'll enjoy it.

Welcome to high school!!! Listen, high school is a big deal and requires a lot of hard work but don't worry, you have Mr. Dubuque. He is my favorite teacher I have had in the high school. He is a fantastic teacher and will always push and help you to succeed.
Biology may be a hard subject for some of you but his class can be easy as long as you do the work he assigns, participate and listen. He gives you note sheets with fill in the blanks and some diagrams which may seem boring to you, but as you go along, filling out the notes becomes fun. Mr Dubuque always jokes around since he knows the note taking can be boring. Along with that, you see that you are able to use your phones in school now! It's a great privilege but don't let it distract you. It prevents you from listening and participation and that will not help when the time comes for a quiz or quizlet. Anyways, bio with Mr. Dubuque was the most fun class I had this year and I think you can have just as much fun, if not more, and do great as long as you participate (especially in smartboard games) and listen.
Now onto the social life of high school. I have met so many people here due to marching band, softball, and association from friends. Join clubs!! Do a sport or some time of extracurricular activity! Softball and marching band made me feel so much more important and included and the people you will meet you may become extremely close with. Joining these things has given me the opportunity to make new friends and figure out who I am and what I want to do throughout the next 3 years. I highly recommend joining a group, you will feel important and maybe feel as if you belong to another family.
I have faith you'll do well this year and have a lot of fun as long as you try your best and put yourself out there :)

Welcome Class of 2022 to Falmouth High School,

First of all, congratulations that you made it this far. Middle School is often a tough road, but High School will be filled with more opportunities and freedom. Welcome to Mr. Dubuque’s Biology class. This was my favorite class ever. Here’s my advice for success:

1. Study for quizlets (quizzes) and quizzes (tests). Mr. Dubuque provides video lessons for each lecture. They are great if you need extra help or for studying. You can also print extra copies of the notes, study guides, smart board games, etc. on his amazing website, under the “missed school?” link.

2. Be responsible and organized. Do your active reading homework and Bio Blogs on time. Plan ahead for the big projects. Don’t procrastinate. Keep your work organized in your Biology binder. Make tabs for the different units, so they will be easy to find when studying for the midterm, final, and MCAS.

3. Participate in class. I’m shy, but I participate if I know something. Mr. Dubuque really seems to appreciate that.

4. MCAS prep - Don’t worry all year about it. Mr. Dubuque will prepare you. The sample tests really help. practicequiz.com is also a good resource. If you sign up, they’ll send you questions of the day.

5. Have fun. Mr. Dubuque is very nice and supportive. Don’t be afraid to email him if you have questions. He gets right back to you.

I know academics seem overwhelming, but it doesn’t take much time to join an after school activity. You will meet new friends and have a better high school experience.

Remember that everyone feels nervous going into high school. Once you settle in, it’s kind of fun. I wish you all the best of luck!

If you got Mr Dubs as a biology teacher you are very lucky. He is very chill unlike all the other biology teachers. You might think that in his class you can just go on your phone and not pay attention to what hes saying but when you have to take the tests you will fail miserably. Mr Dubs makes the hardest tests ever. Its important to pay attention and participate so you don't fail this class because if you fail you will have to do summer school or retake this class next year and that will be awkward. The homework he gives is very easy and you just have to suck it up and do it it literally takes five minutes.

Welcome to Falmouth High School, you will love freshman year lolll. You will have many laughs in this class and will look forward to bio. You honestly don't have that much homework and when you its just active reading when you read a section in the book and write down facts. welcome to high school!! Its not as scary as you're thinking it will be, once you settle in and get used to the bigger school, and getting to your classes on time you'll be just fine. Now because you have Mr. Dubuque as your biology teacher, your freshman year is immediatly better. One thing you'll find out throughout the year is that one, he has a secret safe next to his desk, but we don't talk about that. Another thing you'll find is that as long as you study and do the bio blogs, do your active readings, and pay attention to notes in class, you'll be a okay. Also do not stress about MCAS of finals, Mr. Dubuque will do plentyyyyy of review for MCAS and finals and you'll be just fine for both, no need to be stressed about them. Mr. Dubuque is also a amazing teacher, he'll joke around with you but he also will get serious at times, and maybe yell just a little bit. He also does a great Australian, British, and a sub par southern accent. A great thing to do to have high school be a bit more fun, do a sport or a club!! Even if you've never done the sport ever just try it out, chances are you'll love it and make plenty of new friends from it. I did softball this year and it was one of the best desicions I made all year, I made so many friends through softball and it helped a lot to get through the stress of school. Now, high school might seem scary but you'll be okay, just make sure you study and do your work and you'll be okay, no need to worry. Good luck!! And have fun!!

If you have got Mr Dubuque as your teacher, you are in luck. But to do good in his class you have to do the homework and pay attention in class. It is the same for every class you just have to do your work. Studying is a huge part of doing good too, if you do that you should be good for every class. Good luck

Hello new freshman children, this is the story of my first year at Falmouth High. Before highschool, i despised school so much. It does get better though, a lot better! For Mr.Dubuques class specifically, here is what you gotta know. PAY ATTENTION. To notes, when he talks, when hes giving awesome analogies that will help you a heck ton. Respect him, he is trying his best to relate to you and provide a great learning enviroment for you. He cares too, and that is the best. Highschool is different than middle school and im sure you know that, but just some stuff to prepare for. Upperclassmen will despise you simply because you are a freshman. They do it because the majority does. Do not get in your head about it, it does not help. Im sure you are not just the annoying freshie. Dont treat yourself as though you are, aim for annoying sophmore! kidding, kidding. you will do great, guys. work hard and dont get behind. thats all for ya, OH and yes there really is a pool.

Dear freshman

The work in this class is not easy that's why you have to adjust to being a freshman as soon as possible. This class is much harder so you have to push yourself to work harder. When I came to this class I didn't pay attention to the notes from the class above me and now looking back over them I wish I had. Learn from others mistakes and pay attention in class. Test and quizes are a higher percentage of your grade this year.

For Bio, I would say that if he writes anything on the smartboard, write it down too. Study when you can, but don't fret it if you miss a day of study. I'm not saying not study, just to keep up with things. Stay organized, and check in if you ever are having trouble. Be responsible, and mature about things. Overall, just keep up with your work, check in with teachers when you're having trouble, and always try your hardest.
Good luck!

I know what your thinking, Who is this bald man with Dora stickers and weird star wars figurines covering his room. Even though he may seem like a nerd and he is; he is actually the best teacher you will have this year. This year you will have a bunch of fun, but you have to be sure to keep up with your homework and classwork. He calls tests quizzes and quizzes quizlet's, but that doesn't mean they are any different. You have to be sure to STUDY for them. I messed up a bunch by not studying and then getting bad grades. He also has a lot of notes that may seem annoying but are actually super helpful before a quiz. Be sure to do all your homework because you don't want to fall behind. In all of school though make sure to be involved. Doing sports and clubs helps a lot with making friends. And just like in Mr. Dubuque's class be sure to keep up with all of your work. Anyways good luck, and ask about his kid's because they are actually to most adorable children in the entire world.

Welcome to the high school!!! Freshman year is a very important year and bio is one of the hardest classes. But lucky for you, you have the best bio teacher at the high school and in fact the best teacher in the high school. To do good in this class it takes a lot of hard work, you have to do all of your assignment because if you don't that one zero brings your grade down a lot. You also have to listen and participate to help fill out your note sheets, and you do notes a lot but they are a very big help. Also for tests and quizzes you have to try your best for all of them because if you don't do the best on one it can affect your grade a good amount. Alright enough talking about bio, high school is a moment in your life you'll remember for ever so join a sports team or a club and have fun i have met some of my best friends from playing sports. But don't be nervous you'll have so much fun and meet so many new people so enjoy while you can.

Always make sure you study because each test/quiz can be hard and you always want to be prepared. Maturity is a really important because if your always goofing around then you will have a time learning. Making sure that you get caught up for missing homework and take any tests and quizzes that you owe because it could really impact your grade and making sure you do them could be hard for people especially when you have sports after school or work. Also for MCAS you should definitely study and pay attention because its the most important test you will take in the year.

Welcome to Falmouth High School !! Your year with Mr Dubuque is going to be great. He was my fav teacher this year, and he will mostly be yours as well. Although, biology is very challenging it is very interesting in Mr Dubuque classroom. He makes the subject fun with his classic jokes. My Freshman year was really fun and I had a great experiance. Biology was one of the hardest subjects for me this year, but by using clipper time will help very much. We usually also don't have that much homework so, if you play any sports that is very helpful. The homework we usually have is active reading which we do after notes. Active reading, is when we read in the section we are learning about in the book and write extra notes/fun facts on the topic. I would wish you luck on a great freshman year but I know you won't need it.

Hi freshman! Coming into freshman year I was scared that I might get lost, fall behind on school work, get cut from sports teams, etc. But now looking back I was totally wrong, in fact high school has been a great expierence for me. It is hard to adjust at the beginning due to how much harder it is than 8th grade. Here are a few pieces of advice for you in this upcoming year: 1) Make sure that you come up with a routine that works for you and that you can stick to for the rest of the year. 2) Make sure you are always paying attention in class (especially in bio) because I can assure you that most of that information will be on quizzes and tests. 3) Keep yourself organized at all times, I know you hear this a lot but it really helps you to keep a handle on all of your work. 4) Don’t put off work until the last minute, especially when it comes to tests. Believe me it is really stressful. 5) If you are struggling in class then go talk to your teachers. They will love to help you with anything you need. It is also a good idea to get to know your teachers at the begging of the year and really interact with them well. 6) Lastly, have fun! You only have four years of high school and you have to enjoy it for what it is. It may be stressful sometimes and there may be a lot going on in your life but try to enjoy yourself and have a good time. You’ve really lucked out with mr, Dubuque he is a great teacher. One final piece of advice for his class, study your notes! Believe me it will be helpful for quizlets and quizzes:) Good luck!

Hello incoming freshman!! High school may seem scary but it truly isn't. After a week or two you will be completely adapted. You lucked out. You got Mr. Dubuque who is easily the best teacher I had this year, if not the best teacher I have ever had. So don't worry, you are in good hands. Here are a few tips to help you out this year.

1. Create good work habits. It is important to work on the assigned projects over a few days/weeks instead of cramming it all into one night. You'll create a better project that way. Don't procrastinate.

2. Get sleep. I cannot stress enough how important it is to get a good amount of sleep every night (7-9 hours). You will find that you will score much better on any test or quiz after having a goodnight's rest.

3. Do your homework. You get a lot of homework in high school and you should expect homework in every subject most nights. If you don't do it, your grade will drop. Make sure to do all the active readings not only for the grade, but for a better understanding of the material as well.

4. Study. Inorder to score well on assessments, make sure to review the material outside of class. Mr. Dubuque calls quizzes quizlets and calls tests quizzes which surprisingly lowers the stress levels. The quizlets are worth 25-30 points and the quizzes are worth 50-60 points. You will only take two graded tests for this class, the midterm and the final. The quizlets aren't too hard but it doesn't hurt to do the study guide (found on his website).

5. Find a passion. This year, I discovered how much I loved being apart of the band. Through this, I made so many new friends and the people in the band became like a second family to me. So find what you love and join a corresponding team or club.

6. Use this website!! I cannot describe how much this website has helped me with studying and preparing for the MCAS. If you don't understand the notes you did in class, there are videos for all of the notes on here and don't hesitate to watch them.

If you take my advice, high school will be a breeze. Don't stress too much and put effort into your work. Have fund and I hope you have a good year!!

p.s. Study meiosis hard.

Welcome to your first year of High School, Class of 2022. Freshman year is a big step up from Lawrence, so while there might be more work, as long as you get your work done and strive to learn something in your classes, your Freshman year will be AWESOME. Your schedule can be confusing, and this school is basically a 21st Century Labyrinth, but you will definitely get used to it and will soon know how to navigate the school. But I'm not just here to tell you about how to improve your High School experience. I'm here to tell you about how to have the best experience in Mr. Dubuque's Biology Class.

First off, be glad that you got the BEST Biology teacher for this year. As you will soon come to find, Mr. Dubuque is an incredibly hilarious and fun teacher who has a clear understanding of the topics he will be going over with you this year. But in order to get this out of your Biology experience, there is some advice that is worth hearing, and it will make your time in Biology all the more worthwhile.

1. One of the most important things you can do in this class is study. You don't have to study every day. Most students study before tests, which is extremely helpful, because if you don't know the material, you won't do well. Flashcards are a great too to use, and Mr. Dubuque gives you sheets on the different topics, and you fill in the missing vocab as he teaches it to you through presentations. These sheets are the sacred texts of Biology. In my opinion, these are the best things you can study off of, and they have all the information you need to know. Mr. Dubuque will also, before a chapter quiz, hand back past sheets from your quizzes, which are also good to study off of. If you figure out what you know and what you don't know, you will know what you need to study, but studying it all is also a good idea.

2. Be mature in Mr. Dubuque's class. It's okay for you to crack a few jokes once in a while, but you need to have control of yourself. If you come to class everyday ready to learn and listen to Mr. Dubuque, Mr. Dubuque will very much appreciate it. But if you keep slacking off and shouting when he is talking and continuously don't listen to his instructions, he will not like it, and your experience in this class may become bad, which you don't want. There is also some important items you will need to use while doing labs, and if you don’t show that you can handle doing it, it won’t end well.

3. Be responsible for your own work, and organize it as well. You are responsible for bringing in your own work on time. if you don't, there is no one who you can blame but you. With that said, you should have a binder where all of your notes will go, so you will never need to worry about losing your work for Biology. The work helps you to understand the lessons more, so if you get the work done in time, you will definitely succeed in this class. This is also a great organization tool to use, as all your work is in one place.

4. Manage your time wisely and actively participate. Make sure you don’t waste time after school and put the bio homework off until the last minute. The same goes for all the homework you will be getting this year. Do it as soon as you have time to, and don’t procrastinate, as many teachers take points off for late work, like Mr. Dubuque. You should also try to actively participate in biology class. It can help you to get feedback on your learning and what you know, and it is also a great way for Mr. Dubuque to know how smart you are.

5. There are many ways to get late work done and also to get answers to your questions. If you find that you are slacking behind on some of your work and don’t know how to finish it, you can always ask Mr. Dubuque about how to get it done. He can always schedule you for Clipper Time and can offer you advice on how to get the work done. Also, feel free to ask mr. Dubuque any questions concerning Biology, such as things you are confused on or want more insight on. You can also ask him stupid questions when the time is right, but don’t do it all the time.

Besides Biology, you should also focus on your school life as well. You can always get your friend’s help on work and other problems you may have. I would also suggest that you join an after school club. Joining clubs is a fun experience for all, and you’ll definitely meet some new friends in it as well. Outside of school, you should still continue to do your work that is needed for the class, as well as taking moments to relax in your first week or two. Highschool can be a stressful time, and you deserve a break. And lastly, never forget that Mr. Dubuque will make your time in his class worthwhile, and that you will enjoy every second of his class. I wish you the best of luck on your Freshman year!

Welcome freshman! Congrats on getting Mr. Dubuque! Freshman year is super great if you do it right. Make sure you try super hard and get your GPA up. Some advice I have for bio. Make sure you do your active reading! They help keep your grade up and are fairly easy. They can be super annoying most of the time but its worth the extra points. Also when Mr. D is teaching don't talk and pay attention. He also gets mad of you are on your phone when we are taking notes. But most importantly have a positive attitude! It goes a long way. This class is super fun if you make it that way! Good Luck!!

Mr. Dubuque is a great teacher. In regards to homework he assigns 1-2 active reading per week. They are a force, but you can get them done in 5-10 minutes if you apply yourself. For tests there are a few things you need to know. First, typical quizzes are called quizlets, and tests are referred to by a quiz. The other thing is that you need to study. Slack off all you want when he is giving lessons, but if you want a good grade on the test go to his student generated notes on his website and look over them a lot before a quiz or quizlet. It is really hard to fail this class. Be sure to use his website a lot and do the homework and you will be well on your way to having an amazing freshman year.

Mr. Dubuque honestly sets you up for success with all the resources you need to make the grades this year, so long as you utilize them. Take time in writing your notes and always study before the assessments. Mr. Dub doesn't use the words "quiz" and "test", a quizlet is like a quiz, and a quiz is like the chapter test. It is important not to procrastinate in bio this year because the work will pile up really fast. Once you fall behind it becomes really difficult to grasp other subjects you are learning.
Respect is also important in not just Mr.Dubuque's class but all of your classes. When you give respect you get it in return and then you will actually enjoy your classes. Having bonds with teachers is so important to getting the help you will need in high school, whether it is with work or just life in general. Along with respect, you must be responsible. Responsible for getting your work done and recognizing when you make a mistake. Don't make excuses, own up to things.
The social scene can be difficult or nerve wracking to grasp when you first enter high school. Being a freshman really is not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Getting involved in sports or after school activities is a great way to make friends in each grade. That way if you need advise from someone older you can get it without talking to a teacher.

You made it, you’re finally in high school! At first it seems really scary and like a big change, but after a few weeks you’ll adjust just fine. The initial transition can be hard, but your guidance counselors and teachers provide you will all the information you need. The best advice I can give is to do your homework and classwork, if you do all your work and put in effort to everything you put forward, your year won’t be very difficult. All the teachers in the school are here to help you and if you aren’t good at a particular subject put forward effort and try, you’ll be just fine. Mr.Dubuque’s class is not hard, but studying for the quiz’s (tests) and quizlet’s (quizzes) and using the resources he provides is really important to being successful. In class, Mr.Dubuque provides note sheets where you fill in blanks and it’s super helpful because you know you have all the right information, also you’ll do fun activities such as jeopardy or smart board games to prepare and study. Every quiz and quizlet we had I felt really prepared for due to the extensive studying in class. Mr.Dubuque is really supportive and is always willing to help a student with anything they need, being in his class can be super fun, but being mature is also important in all aspects of the high school in order to be able to have fun and be successful. Mr.Dubuque will give you all the information you need for every test and quizlet and if you study those materials you can do really well in his class. Sometimes throughout the year you might notice that you may not be doing as well as you want to, but you can always improve. I’ve realized over the course of this year that every teacher is willing to help and will offer many opportunities to make up work and work on improving your grade. Aside from academics, FHS offers many other activities and there are so many activities for people of all interests, I think extracurriculars especially at FHS are really good at bringing new people together and can help make the transition into high school easier because you’ll find a lot of people with similar interests to you. At this point managing your time might be more difficult because more is expected of you, but during school clipper time can help a lot with getting extra help, making up work, or just completely homework. Take advantage of the clipper time and use it to do work because it can really help with cutting down on the amount of homework you have to do at home and with making up necessary assignments. Overall your freshman year can be really fun and stress free if you just try your best and enjoy it, because it really does go by so fast!

I'm going to start this off with maturity and responsibility. Mr.Dubuque likes to have as much fun as the next guy, but don't take it to far. You're there to learn and he is there to teach, it's as simple as that. Responsibility is also a big key to freshman year in this class. You're responsible for remembering your homework, materials, doing your classwork, and paying attention. There will be no teachers hovering over you this year making sure you're on task and paying attention. Your study habits will determine how well you will do in this class. Mr.Dubuque provides you with all of the materials you need to prepare yourself for his quizlets and quizzes, it's your job to utilize them and prepare yourself, not his. Bad study habits means bad grades in his class. Organization will also play a big role in this class. Knowing where your notes are, your homework, and your classwork is will be a big priority if you want to succeed in this class. If you're not organized, then you could lose your notes and other materials needed to help you prepare for the class. Time management was one of the big things I had a lot of trouble with this year. I am a big procrastinator, and whenever Mr,Dubs assigned a project, which he gave plenty of time for the class to do, I waited until the last day to do it and it showed in my grade. Whether it be projects, classwork, homework, and even studying, you need to manage your time well. This will cause you to get assignments done on time and with quality work so you can get the best grade you can. Participation in class is also important. Asking questions as well as answering them. You will learn more and get a better experience in class. Lessons will be better understood if you participate a lot. Have fun this year, Mr.Dubs is awesome.

You’ve made it! You are finally in high school, ready to take on the giant halls of FHS. It seriously is not like high school in movies, TRUST ME. I was really nervous coming into FHS, but there is no need. Plus, you have literally the best teacher in the whole school; Mr Dubuque!

Mr. Dubuque is the funniest, nicest, most supportive teacher I’ve ever had. He wants everyone to do well, and his classes are hilarious. Everytime I walked into his room I was excited. He makes biology very easy to understand, and when he starts cracking jokes left and right it’s even better.

He will give you all the information you will need. You will have about one quiz a week, but his quizzes are called “quizlets”, and his tests are called “quizzes”. He’ll explain that later. They are not hard, and you will do so many fun rounds of smartboard games, Kahoots, and games of Jeopardy to prepare. I felt very confident on all the assessments we had (he also includes memes at the end of all of them). Don’t mention Dora to him, or he will put up her picture everywhere. That was Period 5’s legacy.

Luckily, you will have this class every day. It is the only one you don’t miss due to the diagonal. It it honestly the only class I would WANT to have everyday. This is because there is a bio MCAS you have to take at the end of the year. He preps you very well, with writing MCAS-like ORQs that he calls “Bio Blogs”, and giving us the actual test questions from previous years. It was honestly the easiest test ever, please don’t be stressed about it!

Another thing, Mr. Dubuque coordinates the whole science fair. It is not necessary to complete a project, however. But, he and I both STRONGLY recommend that you do it. Completing a project lets you explore an an of science that you don’t learn this year, and it looks really good to colleges on your transcript. There are cash prizes and scholarships given out as well, and if you want to do Science National Honor Society junior or senior year, you need to do two science fair projects anyway. Mr. Dubuque is honestly so supportive and helped me with my project a lot. I won a $200 prize from researching and testing an area of science that I loved.

Now, remember that high school isn’t all about academics. It is honestly really fun (don’t listen to what the seniors say, they just have what we like to call “senioritis”). There are so many clubs and activities you can be involved with. There’s math team, where you get free food and compete against other schools in rounds (we made it to playoffs this year!); there’s model UN where you also get to compete in conferences; Mock Trial where you get to reenact a trial in a competition courthouse with a real judge; marching band where you make the best memories you will ever have; and many many more. You also get to have an elective class, which can range from woodshop to culinary to ceramics.

Sports are also a really big part of FHS. The teams are so competitive and really feel like family. You will have practice every day after school, so it is a big commitment, but it is so much fun.

All this being said, high school is really where you find yourself. The homework load is not as crazy as you may think, and you will have time during school to complete your homework. Freshmen are eligible for two honors classes that require placement exams and recommendations: History and English. I have learned that it is important to have fun in high school. You don’t need to be constantly stressed or study as hard for that one test. NO! PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT! I was miserable during second quarter because I worked so hard for an A in honors english. Honestly, it is not worth it. The sooner you know this coming into high school, the better. A senior was the one who told me that, and it will seriously change your life.

You are going to have an amazing freshmen year, and I wish you the best. Don’t be afraid of high school, Mr. Dubuque and I (even though you don't know who I am), have got your back!

Welcome to high school, get ready to change your instagram bio to "FHS '22". First off are study habits. You can't ignore a test and pretend it doesn't exist by not studying then expect to do well. You can't just take a test and answer the questions from memory. Make flashcards, or read over your notes before a major test or quiz. You also can't fool around in class anymore. You can have fun, but you can't scream and interfere with the class. You can have fun in class as long as the teacher doesn't tell you not to. You're also responsible for your own grades. If you want to get a grade up you have to ask the teacher what you can do, not just expect it to magically fix itself. Organization is important to a point. I'm not the most organized person, but I still have binders for each class and I keep my papers. You should keep your papers in order at the very least. Don't leave homework or projects for the last minute either. You have to manage your time wisely or your grades will fall. Make sure you participate in class. You get a fresh start at a new school, you can change your ways from being shy or maybe disruptive, to participating and helping the class discussion. Whenever your grades fall don't freak out, you can fix it, but only if you take responsibility for yourself. Good luck this year. Have fun.

First thing’s first: you are honestly the luckiest students you could possibly be to have Mr. Dubuque as a teacher. Now, no matter how amazing of a teacher he is (you may disagree, but that’s fine), you will still have to study. Maybe a lot. You do get note sheets that you fill out together in class, but then it’s up to YOU to study them before the quizzes. I definitely recommend studying, because even if the material is easy, it gives you an extra boost of confidence which can make a huge difference in your grade to know that you studied the material and really have it down. In class, it’s okay to mess around a little bit and to really show your own personality, but just be careful that you can draw the line between being distracting, and just being you. As a freshman, you will probably be confused about yourself, and that’s normal. Don’t be shy, don’t hide yourself from the spotlight, because the best thing you can do is try to establish yourself early. High school will be fun, and I know that you will enjoy it. Don’t forget the basics, do your homework, and partcipate in class, even when you are afraid you won’t be right. Mr Dubuque, even if he makes fun of you a little bit, will be very appreciative that you tried. A+ for effort! By now, you’ve got the school thing down. You’ve been going everyday for 10 years. You got this. Most of all, have fun. Freshman year will be an awesome one.

welcome class of 2022!

if you are reading this, then congratulations, you have mr. dubuque as a teacher!

1. study habits: high school is a lot more difficult and time consuming than middle school was, i recommend studying at least 10 minutes per night for different subjects, that helps more than you think. especially in the harder subjects. also, quizlet is your best friend!! i created quizlets for upcoming tests and quizzes that i could use to study at home and at school.

2. organization: having a folder for each class makes life so much easier instead of having a huge binder that you keep everything in! i also had a pencil bag for obviously keeping pencils, pens, highlighters, and erasers. that makes everything a bit more organized than shoving pencils in your front pocket of your backpack. & at the end of each quarter i cleaned all notes and homework out of my folders and put them in a binder that i kept at home, this helps for finals so you have them on hand instead of throwing them away.

3. sleep!! i promise, getting a good nights sleep is worth more than staying up studying/doing homework. your mental and physical health is more important than getting an A on a test

4. join clubs or sports!! it's a great way to meet people and learn good sportsmanship and work ethic.

with all this being said, high school overall is so much fun! i have really opened up and met so many amazing people! i wish you the best of luck!

Welcome to FHS! I know a lot of you guys are probably nervous about your first year in high school both socially and academically, but you really have no reason to be! FHS is a great community of both students and teachers, and though it might be intimidating first, you will settle right in.

Academic-wise, I have confidence that if you all work hard and put forth your best effort you will be able to pass all of your classes without a problem. The teachers here at FHS are positive and uplifting, and they all want to see you succeed. Of course if you start slacking on work, your grades will reflect it, but your teachers are going to make it very hard for you to fail. Mr. Dubuque is one of these teachers that sincerely wants to see you succeed both inside and outside of his class. You all are lucky to get the chance to work with a teacher that is able to stay organized and teach all the information you need to know (and more!) while also creating a fun and positive learning environment.

In my experience, Mr. Dubuque’s class was not too difficult, but I can understand that all of the information you’ll be receiving may get overwhelming. To relieve some of the stress that will come with a high school-level biology class, one thing I would certainly recommend is to pay attention when you take notes. Mr. Dubuque has very organized slide presentations that correspond nicely with the note sheets he’ll be giving you. Always make sure you are taking down all of the notes, and also, make sure to listen when he is covering information. His note sheets will be a great resource for when you need to study unicorn for quizzes and quizlets, which brings me to another tip: definitely study before any assessments in his class. If you study for even just 15 minutes or so the night before a quiz or quizlet, you shouldn't find any of them to be too difficult. I would also recommend to take advantage of his website-- it has a lot of great resources that can also be beneficial study tools. It also makes catching up on any missing or late work you may have very easy. He has a daily calendar where you can see everything you missed if you are absent from a day of bio. Finally, I know some of you may be a little stressed about taking the bio MCAS this year, but I want to reassure you that Mr. Dubuque will prepare you well for it. You shouldn’t have anything to worry about when the MCAS comes around in June.

In terms of the social aspects of transitioning to high school, I am going to reiterate that you have nothing to worry about. FHS is a very positive and accepting community, and I’m sure you will all fit in. If you are worried at all about not being able to make friends or anything of the like, FHS has countless opportunities for you to participate in after school clubs or sports. There are activities for everyone! Other than that, I would recommend surrounding yourself with a good friend group, while also being accepting of all of your peers. Finally, I want to let you all know that once you get to high school, immaturity and childish behavior isn’t going to be tolerated by either your teachers or fellow students. Remember, you are going to be surrounded by upperclassmen that aren’t going to tolerate any immature behavior.

Anyways, I hope you all have a wonderful freshman year at FHS! You are fortunate to have gotten Mr. Dubuque for bio, (and I guarantee that within the first month of school he will be one of your favorite teachers ever.) Have a great year! #BIODUBFOREVER

Welcome to high school! If you are reading this it most likely means that you have Mr Dubuque as your BIO teacher, and that means you are lucky. BIO with Mr Dubuque is going to be one of the best classes you will take. There isn't too much homework every night and when there is, it isn't too hard. Also taking notes in his class is very easy and is probably the best way to take notes. Don't forget to be doing your work because you don't want to fall behind in this class. High school is going to be a fun and good time for you guys, good luck as freshman's!

High school already? Wow. Good thing you have Mr. Dubuque to help through your first year here, especially with biology.
One of the biggest things you'll do this year is take the Bio MCAS, but don't worry, Mr. Dubuque will spend most (if not all) of the year making sure you're ready when testing rolls around in June. Though his class is pretty easy (and fun), there are a few things you should know that will help you through it.
1. Always always ALWAYS study for quizzes and quizlets. You might have been able to get away with not studying last year, but now is when it really comes in handy. Quizzes and quizlets make up a large portion of your grade, and aren't things that you can just guess on. Flashcards and Quizlet both come in handy when you need to study.
2. Pay attention when taking notes. It's easy to read through the notes that Mr. Dubuque gives you, but if you don't listen while he's talking or watch the presentations he gives you won't be able to really grasp the concepts.
3. Don't leave projects or homework until last minute. Though he doesn't give out very much of it, the homework you'll get in this class usually requires a bit of thought, and can take a little longer than your other homework. His projects usually have a creative element, and can take up to two weeks to finish.
Sadly, school's not all about bio. One of the biggest changes from Lawrence to the High School is the amount of opportunities to join clubs and sports. Try to take as many as you can, because they help you meet new people and learn new things that can help you along the way.
Though your social life is very important, you need to balance it with your school life, and this means controlling how often you use your phone in school and not letting hanging out with your friends come before doing homework and finishing projects.
It might seem scary now, but in just a few weeks you'll get the hang of high school, and don't be afraid to ask Mr. Dubuque any questions.

Welcome to FHS! And more importantly Mr. Dubuque's class! This was my favorite class throughout the year so consider yourself lucky. But it's only fun if you follow these guidelines. In Mr. Dubuque's class it is crucial for you to pay attention and take notes. These notes will be extremely important to know for the quizzes and quizlets, but especially the MCAS at the end of the year. It is also extremely important to study for quizzes... I learned that the hard way in his class. Just being there in class and learning isn't going to get you an A, you have to study and work hard for it. In fact this class held me back from high honors because I didn't put in the full effort as I should have. Not only is studying important, but completing homework is too. He doesn't assign that much, but when he does it is essential to get done. FHS is not only great because of Mr. Dubuque, but also the sheer amount of extra curricular activities available for students. I completely regret only joining one club, and wish to join many more next year. You should do the same! They have all sorts of clubs, ranging from a soccer team, to a math team, to so many more. This might seem a bit overwhelming right now for you, but don't worry because FHS is very welcoming and has a pleasant environment. Good luck with freshman year!

Dear incoming freshmen class,
You probably have many unanswered questions as you are starting high school. Starting with academics, you are probably wondering how grading and work is done this year. Personally I found my freshman year, to be more challenging than my eighth grade year. Although it is more challenging it is very manageable. In Mr.Dubuque’s bio classes you will be learning a lot, but despite that if you listen well during note and during review games, then you should be able to pass just fine.
As you are new to the school I highly recommend joining a club or a team in which you feel you fit in best. This will not only give you something to do in your free time, but it gives you something to make you more unified with the school. You will also meet more people from various grades and make strong relationships with them. Getting friends from different grade will expand your friendship to more people. Although I would recommend to try to stay as far away from other people drama as possible, because while tackling your schoolwork it will be hard for you to also handle feuding friendships. I wish you the best of luck this school year, and hope this helps.

Overall, this year has been amazing having Mr.Dubuque as a teacher. I never thought that biology would be this fun because I was expecting it to be like the stereotypical high school class (boring, & way too much hw). However, in his class there is still work required to receive a good grade. Before all of the quiz/quizlets you have to make sure that you study before all of them because they are heavily based off the notes. Participating and doing hw will better help you understand what is happening in class because then Mr.Dubuque can correct you and you can learn more. Along with participating in class, doing extra curricular activities can help you make new friends and get the full high school experience throughout your 4 years at Falmouth High. In High School it is a great opportunity to meet so many different people that you have probably never seen or met before. Enjoy highschool while you can, my freshman year flew by!

Biology class for me personally was not my best, and there are many reasons for why, including not studying as much as I should have, not listening in class and many other reasons. A problem I personally have is I am more of a visual learner than a listener, Mr. Dubuque talks, a lot, meaning that I didn't always grasp what he said, he provided tons of notes for us and instead of staying after or signing up for clipper time I just ignored it and pushed it aside and then when quizzes came up... I was so screwed. So my suggestion for you 8th graders is that if you are having a problem with a certain chapter or even all of them, talk to him. Make the time and don't wait until last minute and or do nothing at all, advocate for yourself, put in the extra time. You will not regret it. Also, DO YOUR HOMEWORK like no joke, its beyond annoying to have to active readings at once because its a lot of work, and just having it done on time is such a reward. Also while you do your active reading, actually read what you are writing. Overall just do your work, on time, and actually know what you are talking about, be able to explain what you are doing. Also Mr. Dubuque is the bestest teacher and everyone will be jealous that you have him, good luck this year!

As for Biology this year I don’t know where to begin. I have had by far the best experiences in this class, have formed many new friendships, and learned so much just by sitting in this class. Mr. Dubuque is THE BEST teacher he has helped me become more engaged and has helped me grow my love of science. As for his class there could not be a better way to learn. Most of the time he gives presentations on the smart board while we take notes. He gives us most of the information and we just have to fill in the blanks (“I give you the meat and potatoes and you just have to pour on the gravy” - Mr. Dubuque). You have to make sure to do the notes though, they are a great way to study for quizzes and quizlets. Which brings up another point, quizzes are the equivalent of a test and quizlets are the same as a quiz. I know it’s confusing but he’ll explain to you why it’s like that if he hasn’t already. Also just to make things even weirder they are worth the same amount in Power School so..? As for highschool life, the biggest piece of advice I can give you is not to stress. I know it sounds cliche but time and time again I was finding myself stressing out and not being able to focus on what mattered. I also find it helpful that playing sports is a great way to build your social life. Personally I joined Volleyball, Track, and Golf this year and it has made a huge impact on my social life. Therefore if you can manage your time well I highly recommend playing a sport or two. I hope that you will be able to form a (peptide) bond similar to what I had formed with Mr. Dubuque. Whenever I had a rough day I know that once I stepped into that classroom that my spirits could be lifted. Lastly if you look on the ledge above the smartboard you’ll notice a giant card with a groundhog holding a lightsaber ask him about it because Groundhog Day is his favorite holiday, and keep an eye out for pictures of Dora around his room your bound to find some. ; )

welcome to the high school! coming here from Lawrence is a pretty big transition, but not as scary as you may think it is. Things like lunch waves, navigating hallways, and getting to class on time end up being so simple by the end of the second week. But, a few tips you may want to keep in mind for the year overall, and specifically for bio: 1. do the assignments on time. as simple as this may sound, you actually can lose a lot of points of an assignment because you didn't do it on time. and ends up being not worth it to sacrifice those points. 2. you do have to step it up academic and maturity wise. you may have just made it through junior high doing the bare-minimum, but that probably won't go so good here. 3. pay attention in class and participate. for Mr. Dubuque's class, participating in things like Kahoots and Jeopardys are actually really helpful for the quizzes and quizlets. they're also pretty fun. and note-wise, listening in while you fill in the notes is really beneficial because it helps to clarify what's on the paper. 4. do the study guides. the bio study guides are, content-wise, very similar to the quizlets/quizzes, so even just looking over them and making sure you know everything on them can help ensure a good grade. 5. use clipper time. in the end, it's your choice if you sit on your phone for the 30 minutes but using that time to do homework or make-up work helps to leave you more free-time in the afternoon, and prevent from a really big work build-up if you miss school one day. 6. try not to be tardy. for freshmen, this one isn't always in your control if you have an older sibling driving you and you have to wait for them. but try to get here on time, because you do get detentions for being tardy, and they're long and boring a lot of the time. 7. don't stress about MCAS. you only have to take one this year, and your bio teacher makes sure you're really well prepared for it. make sure to do the reviews and put effort in, and you'll be fine. 8. don't let work pile up. this goes along with procrastination, if you get a project that's due in three weeks, try to not push it to the last day, cause you'll most likely have stuff to work on that day, and then you'll have to push it aside to work on the project. even if you only use the last week, it's a lot better than the last day. 9. join a sport or club. I know this one is said a lot but, it's probably going to be a lot easier to join a new sport as a freshmen than an upperclassmen. and even if you end up hating it, at least you tried. and there's the possibility of meeting upperclassmen in those sports and making friends with them, which would probably make high school seem a little bit less scary for you. enjoy your freshmen year, and good luck!

Oh my gosh high school. It’s really not too different from lawerence so don’t be worried. And to make it better you have mr. dubuque the queen of bio. He is the most fabulous teacher you will ever have. He’s extremely reasonable so you should really do your homework. He’s hilarious and if you finish your work you might get to play fortnite or watch fail videos. The notes he does are not boring and they help a lot. Overall mr. dubuque is a great teacher and will help you get through high school. And even if you hate his class your freshmen year will go by fast.

Welcome to the high school! It isn’t too much different than Lawrence, but there is some differences. For one, make sure to have a planner or some place to record assignments, if you don’t, you’ll have a very hard time keeping track off assignments from all 7 classes. Another piece of advice for school is to not leave all of your homework till clipper time! It’ll stress you out during the day. Try and join activities in the school, as it’ll help you become friends with many people, as well as people who know the school that you can ask if you need help. There’s lots of activities for any interest. Everything at the high school seemed wicked confusing at first but by the first month of school you’ll know exactly where to go. Try to be on time for class everyday, because if you get 4 tardies you’ll get a detention. Some advice for this class is to pay attention during notes, everything on the notes will be on the quizlets (quizzes)! This year will fly by, but it’s going to be very fun! Good luck!
