Bio Blog #1 - New School Year's Reflection

9/8/2019

Spend about 10 minutes casually reading some of the advice left to you from my Biology students 2 years ago in the previous blog post. You can also read their advice HERE.

Don't just read the first ones. Read some at the beginning, read some in the middle, read some at the end. Read some long ones. Read some short ones. They are all valuable.

Once you have spent about 10 minutes reading through their advice. Answer the prompts below.

(Follow THESE INSTRUCTIONS when entering a Bio Blog response).

1. Regarding my class in particular, what are 4 of the most common pieces of advice?

2. Regarding the high school experience as a whole, what are 2 are pieces of advice that are the most meaningful to you?

1.) The four most common pieces of advice that I got from previous freshman were to make sure you get enough sleep, stay organized, don't push homework aside or think it doesn't effect your grade, and most mentioned have fun and get involved with the school.

2.) The two pieces of advice that I found most meaningful were to make sure I got all of my work done during class so you can have less homework and more free clipper time and to make sure that you don't goof around in class and to clear your name from all bad reputations so you can have a great four years of high school.

1:Don't stress about the MCAS, you really need to pay attention when taking notes, you really need to study, and do the Bio Blogs.

2: Probably the study one because I never study thoroughly but somehow do fine sometimes. They say the tests are hard and I'm not looking forward to that but I'll see what I'll do. The other one that's good is the like "don't stress over the MCAS" because I literally hear that every year and it never keeps me from not stressing but it's supposed to keep you from doing that but it's good advice I guess.

Be responsible, organized, mature and have study habits are the main advice to get good grades and to have a good year in Biology. Be responsible means doing every homework and classwork; it also includes not being late. Keep the work organized, so you don't get confused and disoriented. Be mature means to do the work without being childish, you need to do the work seriously. You need to study for all quizzes and quizlet, so you can get a good grade. For me, the most important advice is to be responsible and organized with your work, so the year with Mr. Dubuque will be awesome!

1. In particular the 4 most common pieces of advice, in order is study,do homework, particapate and pay attention. Studying for quizlets and quizzes is very important in everyones view. It makes you a better student and perpare for things you might not understand. Homework is also very important since it is worth a part of you grade and if you get a 0 on one assignment then it will bring down all your averages. Particapation is also very important for the same reason but paticapating will help you understand the material, and ask questions you need to ask. And finally paying attention, focusing on the speaker will help you alot because if you don't pay attention then you will fail bio, and every other class.

2.High school as a whole is a different story, joining clubs and making friends are a few of the important things to do at fhs. Joining clubs is good for your college applications and just plain old fun to do. Making friends will be helpful, if you don't you'll be miserable and won't focus as much.

1. The most common piece of advice I saw was definitely to study for Quizlets, as they're a decent portion of the grade and pretty hard. The second most common piece of advice was to be responsible and mature, no horsing around, no joking around to excess, basic stuff. The third most common piece of advice was to stay organized, keep homework and notes in a specific Bio folder so you don't lose it and forget about it. The 4th most common piece of advice was to not procrastinate on doing the homework, as the late grades pile up, and you'll probably be behind.

2. Easily, the primary advice for High School was to join clubs, or some school activity, to enrich in the school culture, make new friends, and all that. The second most common piece of advice. This was easily most of the comments left from other students about advice for High School as a whole, so finding a prominent second one was a little hard. However, one thing I did notice was the importance of grades now, and how you cant slack off because everyone will be noticed and considered during the college process.

After reading all the student's different story, the 4 most commons things said by students were to stay organized, always participate in class, pay attention and to work hard. Two pieces of advice that mean the most to me are be responsible and always study for test and quizlets.

While reading the pieces of advice I found a few things that most of the kids mentioned. The first thing I noticed was that you sure need to study for your class. They said that you will help a lot but studying for the quizlets is one of the most important things to do. The next thing I noticed was that we should do all our homework even when you don’t give too much. Doing homework is important for you to know what we have learned and if we need extra help or not. Another thing I saw was that we should join clubs and sports because being involved with sports is fun and a big part of high school. Lastly a lot of them recommend participating in class because it’s a prettier decent grade which we shouldn’t get a zero for not participating. The biggest two that are most meaningful is the studying and participating. Participating like talking and being called on isn’t one of my best features because I get nervous I’ll say the wrong answer and embarrass myself. The study is also a big factor because I would like to keep my grade at an A in biology because I’m trying to make high honors. Hopefully I can’t stick with the advice I’ve been given and get on the high honors and have a great four successful years!

Some of the most common pieces of advice i think would be to always pay attention and get your work done, also to make sure you are studying whenever you can. I also think that most kids said that you are a pretty awesome teacher and I am very lucky, lastly I think that some common advice would be to always ask questions if your confused and never hesitate. The two most meaningful pieces of advice would be to not use your device/phone the whole class and not to stress out about MCAS finals or anything test related. I chose those because i tend to use my phone a lot and it is not a good habit also i usually stress out about big tests because i always want to get a good grade and those tests can be really difficult for me sometimes.

The four most common advice that I heard was to always make sure to study for everything, participate in class, be very mature, and lastly do the homework. These four things I kept seeing repeat the most throughout the advice that was written. The two pieces of advice that where the most meaningful to me when they kept saying we will be prepared for the mcas, to not worry as much about that. Another reassuring thing I read was everyone kept saying that this year is going to be one of the best years of our lives and that we will adjust to the school.

Throughout the comments of prior freshman students I have picked four pieces of advice that will help me through Mr. Dubuque's class and two pieces of advice that will help me through high school overall.

I learned that in Mr. Dubuque's class it it is extremely important to pay attention in class and study so that you can pass all your quizlets. I learned that studying beforehand and getting yourself familiar with the content you are learning will make test taking easy and will alleviate all your worries.
Next, I learned not to use your phone in biology unless you are allowed to. Using your phone in class can distract you and you could miss something really important and thus you could do badly on a test. When a lesson has started, put your phone away and your earbuds in your bag and give your full attention to what your learning about.
I also learned to not mention Dora to Mr. Dubuque. It was a strange piece of advice that I came across but it could explain why there is pictures of Dora mysteriously plastered around the classroom walls...
Lastly, I learned to always participate in labs and to have fun with it and be creative. Use labs as a way to explore science but also create your own point of views.
I read that in high school you should always try and participate in after school clubs and sports. Getting yourself involved in activities outside of school will help your academic performance. Always try to find something outside of school that is fun and engaging.
The last piece of advice that I will take with me is to not feel obligated to sign up for everything and try to get honors because its your first year. Stressing yourself out to impress everyone else will only make your freshman year miserable. I thought that in order to be a good student you had to get all A's on everything and have a 4.0 GPA but now I know that as long as I always participate and maintain a good attitude than I will be a good student.. This doesn't mean that I won't strive to get the highest grade possible but I probably wouldn't be so hard on myself if I get a B on a test.
These are all of the pieces of advice that I will take with me throughout my freshman year.

The four most common pieces of advice i found were to always study when there is going to be a test, to do your homework on time, to pay attention in class, and to not procrastinate.
The two most meaningful pieces of advice I found were to always study before a test, because i always forget to study, and to never procrastinate, because i never do my work until the day before its due, which I need to change.

I think the most valuable thing i saw in all comments i read was study and stay organized. Also to act mature and don't try and act cool or fool around in class and to use clipper time as a huge tool to stay ahead of everything or keep track as well

The four most common pieces of advice I found was to study, whenever there's a quiz or quizlet. Using the resources Mr. Dubuque gives us, his website, notes etc. Also to make sure were listening, doing the class work, and homework, which will help us with are grade and quizzes. Along with making sure your organized, keeping all your work and notes together, so that you have them for a quiz, along with the final. Lastly to encourage us to join a club or a sport, because you get really close to each person, from going to practice’s everyday after school.
Two of the most meaningful pieces of advice was that the class isn’t that difficult, but just doing your homework, paying attention, along with studying is really all you have to do because Mr. Dubque prepares us so well. And not to leave homework or projects to the last day, I find I tend to push the assignment out of my mind till the last couple days. So this year I just have to remind myself to work over the course of the time period, and not wait till the last day.

Regarding Mr Dubuque's class the four most repeated pieces of advice would be to 1) study for quizzes/use the material given regarding quizzes. 2) to do all homework give because it will become helpful later on. 3) to participate in class, to keep up a good grade. and last but not least to stay on top of work give, meaning that it is important to make sure all work is completed by the appropriate times/ not "goofing off". Two pieces of advice that I stuck with me that was about the high-school were to use clipper time because it is a good use of time, meaning that I will be good for talking to teachers and work on projects, homework, and other important assignments. The other piece of advice was to be as independent as we can because nobody will be able to "hold our hand" as we go along.

1.) From the student responses, I have found the 4 most common pieces of advice are to study hard, stay organized, participate in class, and do homework and stay on top of given tasks.
2.) The biggest pieces of advice regarding the high school as a whole that were important to me are to just be respectful to everyone, and you will be treated equally, and to work hard because it will payoff in the future.

I believe that the 4 most common pieces of advice were to always study, every one of the advice I read told me to study for everything even if I think I'm going to do well there is no harm in studying. A lot of responses also told me to always do my homework, although you don't give a lot, they said that when you do it is important to do it. It will not only help boost your grade but it will also help you understand things that you go over in class. The responses told me to also always participate in class, they said that if you ask something that I know I should raise my hand because it will help a lot with my grade and also keep me engaged in what I'm learning and will help me to understand more. Lastly, they said that it is not cool to fool around, it is always good to pay attention and stay focused because biology is hard and it will be even harder if you don't stay focused and engaged in what you're learning.
2 advice comments people wrote about the high school in general was to always be yourself even if you think someone will judge you, no one will and it is very important especially in high school to be yourself no matter what. They also said that I should always try new things such as extra curricular's and sports. They said that not only will it be great for college but it also helps you make a lot of new friends and it will help you feel better about your freshman year.

The most common pieces of advice are to say to participate, to study out of school, to take notes and also just work hard. More advice about school in general is to take advantage of clipper time and also study because FHS is harder than Lawrence. And also to become more mature because there are consequences for not.

I think that the thing i read most is to always stay on top of your work, do your homework because it's very easy, do the bio blogs even though they are annoying, and to have fun! Two pieces of advice that meant the most to me was to have fun, and to study because the tests/quizzes are hard.

The four most common pieces of evidence that were posted in the comments were to not procrastinate, study, do homework, and pay attention in class. The 2 most meaningful pieces of advice to me were to not procrastinate and to do my homework because I have always been bad with those things, I have always been bad with turning in homework and I have always been a procrastinator.

1.There was so much great and helpful pieces of advice in all of those paragraphs that I could really benefit from but the 6 most common pieces of advice was to be your own person and to not care about what others think, join sports, and clubs at the fhs, studying is key, and participating in class is so important because it can determine what you get on quizlets and quizzes, and most important one time management, and also getting the sleep that's needed for the next day.

2. The two most important pieces advice that are meaningful to me and that I could benefit from is to make sure I join sports or be apart of a club just to get to know upperclass men and get to know people better. Next most meaning full piece of advice is to be mature, kind, responsible, and friendly because I may forget this but I am representing fhs and its important to have those character traits in general.

The responses are mostly about if you don't do your homework then you will not do good in this class and that if you dont study that you won't get a good grade in this class.

I think the 4 most common types of advice are that bio isn´t very hard, if you do your homework you will be fine and that studying even for a little bit is important.

The two pieces of advice that are most meaningful to me is that if you do your homework and study you will be fine and also to enjoy highschool before its gone and we´re stuck out in the real world.
