#BioDub Tonight's Homework Problem - Natural Selection on Polygenic Traits

3/22/2016

You are studying the grey squirrel population in Falmouth, MA. In particular, you are studying the length of their tails. Squirrels use the tail for many things like balance as well has carrying a scent that attracts squirrels of the opposite gender. It is also worth noting the following:
Picture
  • scent attracts predators as well as mates
  • long tails can increase the chance that squirrels are caught by predators
  • squirrels with longer tails can more easily balance as they navigate through trees

Here is the initial data taken in 2006:

Tail length (cm)          # Individuals Counted
       10                                    5
       11                                    8
       12                                   12
       13                                   15
       14                                   20
       15                                   30
       16                                   28
       17                                   21
       18                                   14
       19                                    9
       20                                    3
For homework, choose ONE of the counts from 2016 below. On the back of your Chapter 16-1 notes...
  • Create a labelled line graph that includes both the 2006 data as well as the 2016 data (2 separate, distinct lines, on the same graph)
  • Identify the option you chose (A or B)
  • Identify the type of natural selection that occurred on the grey squirrel population over the 10 years.
  • Explain a brief but possible cause that would create the kind of natural selection you identified on the squirrel population .
2016 Data (Option A)
