Mr. Dubuque's #SongOfTheWeek 9/2 - 9/9/2018

9/3/2018

A brief introduction to my song of the week posts:
I consider myself a fan of music. Not just any music... good music. My music catalog diversity has received praise from dozens. And, as much as my job is to educate tomorrow's productive citizens in the disciplines of biology, science, and engineering, I am taking it upon myself to provide for the students great music. Every week, I will (try to) feature a new song, providing links both on iTunes, You Tube, & Spotify. I will also make the concerted effort to only feature songs of a non-controversial manner (i.e. appropriate lyrics, appropriate subject matter, etc.). Listen if you choose, ignore if you must. You may enjoy my taste in music, you may despise it. When all is said and done, discovering a new, great song brings joy to my heart, and I hope it does for each of you, at least once.

All that being said, I want to start the year with my absolute most favorite band. I am accepting the fact that many of my students might not like them, but trust me, their influence is huge. My song of the week is Idioteque by Radiohead off their 2000 album Kid A.

The song of the week is Screaming Infidelities by Dashboard Confessional. The 2001 song (and pretty much all of their/his songs) are about bad relationships and break-ups. Prepare to get depressed and think about all those lost loves.

The song of the week is Come As You Are, their second hit released after their classic groundbreaking song, Smells Like Teen Spirit. Both songs are off their quintessential album, Nevermind.

My song of the week is in memory of Delores O'Riordan who passed away on Monday. She was the lead singer of The Cranberries, an Irish band I listened to a lot in high school. Although not one of their hits, Dreaming My Dreams was my favorite song of theirs.

All that being said, I want to start the year with my absolute most favorite band and the band that I consider to be THE most important artist out there now. I am accepting the fact that many of my students might not like them, but trust me, their influence is huge. My song of the week is Where I End and You Begin by Radiohead off their 2003 album Hail to the Thief.

Although this song came out in 1989, it is a 90's song. They were weird, but we loved them. Epic is Faith No More's most popular song and in its own right helped usher in a more alternative rock that bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam made famous.

Technically, I have 2 songs of the week. Coming off of a pretty rotten election season, everything seems divided. Honestly, in my lifetime, the country has never felt this split to me. In a week where we come together with friends and family, I hope we don't lose sight of all that brings us together in lieu of all that drives us apart.

One song is Bob Marley's classic One Love from 1977. The song needs no description.

Albeit this song isn't quite as direct as One Love, One by U2 (1991) is about building unity after a division. The song is actually about the band's almost breakup, the band members finding it difficult to stay together because of their creative  differences. Not only is the song about overcoming those differences, but rumor has it, writing the song itself actually actually helped keep the band together.

It is safe to say that this will be a historic and potentially volatile week with the 2016 presidential election on Tuesday. As much as I hope one particular candidate wins over the other, my more cynical side realizes that regardless of our next president, the working class seems to get the shaft. When all is said and done, the candidates are rich people who have rich friends who are going to benefit more than we ever will. That being said, there is something proud and glorious about being in the working class, even if we never really get all that we are promised. Sorry for being cynical again... hopefully I will be wrong. To that note, please enjoy Dropkick Murphys Worker's Song from 2003. Although, they did not write the song, they gave it their signature guttural Celtic-punk edge. Before they broke through, they had a series of albums; Worker's Song is on the "Blackout" album, one of the last albums before they gained mainstream popularity with Shipping Up to Boston.

I stumbled by this song on Pandora, enjoyed it immediately, and purchased it soon after. Since Halloween is this week, I think this song makes (even though the song has nothing to do with ghosts). The artists are Tegan and Sara and the song is Walking With a Ghost from 2004.
