#BioDub Candy Corn:Lipid Bi-layer Analogy

11/2/2015

Picture
Remember there is water both inside and outside of the cell. Each candy corn represents a lipid (phospholipid) molecule. The white and orange portions are "afraid of water" or hydrophobic. The yellow portion is "OK with water" or hydrophilic. The only way the phospholipids can line up so that the hydrophobic side of the molecule is protected from the water in & out of the cell is to make two layers, back-to-back... hence the lipid bi-layer.
